Funny Valentines Cards 2015

History

The history behind Valentine's day is shrouded in mystery. One legend states that Valentine was a priest who was imprisoned for performing soldier's marriages after it was forbidden - the Roman Emperor of the time thought that single men would make better soldiers so had outlawed their marriage. Saint Valentine continued to perform marriages for these young lovers in secret and, when his actions were discovered, he was sentenced to death.

Another legend tells of an imprisoned Valentine falling in love with a girl - possibly his jailor's daughter - who had been visiting him during his confinement. Before his death, he wrote a letter signed 'your Valentine' - an expression still in use today!

Modern History

In 1797, a British publisher issued The Young Man's Valentine Writer, which contained scores of suggested sentimental verses for the young lover unable to compose his own. Hand written romantic notes would be created and sent in person, often left on a doorstep. The advent of lower postal rates in the next century allowed the practice of mailing Valentines. That, in turn, made it possible to exchange cards anonymously, which is taken as the reason for the sudden appearance of racy verse in an otherwise prudishly Victorian era.

Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have given way to mass-produced greeting cards . . .

This Year's Humorous Valentine's Cards

In recent years though, the sending of traditional Valentine's cards has been on a continual decline as evidenced by an annual survey of greeting card retailers. Over-commercialisation could perhaps be blamed for turning a romantic day into an almost nauseating one, full of heart shaped gifts, balloons and penis shaped chocolates! Which is a shame as romance is definitely not dead.

At the Comedy Card Company, we only deal with funny greeting cards, and Valentines is no exception! And we're glad of this, because we think the cards that we sell are still romantic at heart, but less 'cheesy' than the traditional offering. And what better way to say 'I love you' than to make your loved one smile?
